Quite the biggest of the current riots is Jean Harlow, the platinum blonde star of “Hell’s Angels,” who is visitng Gothamtown for the first time in her young life. Miss Harlow made her film debut in the sky thriller on which Howard Hughes, young Texas millionaire, is said to have spent $4,000,000.
Miss Harlow, it turns out, is another little girl from Kansas City, who has made good in a big way, and when she finishes her spending spree here she will return to Hollywood and begin work on “The Front Page,” the next Hughes phlicker. She didn’t become a movie star on purpose, she explains. She went to Hollywood for no particular reason and met up with a lot of movie folks and before she realized it she was cavorting before the camera.
“I am only a young girl, as you can see for yourself,” she said yesterday to a flock of newspaper interviewers who cracked down on her. “My grandfather threatened to disinherit me for going into pictures, but, since he has heard the good reports of the production, all is forgiven.”
At the moment Jean is industriously engaged in sampling our dusk-to-dawn dungeons and you won’t, we’re sure, drop dead with surprise when we add that the little lady inquires ever so coyly, “Isn’t New York wonderful?”
