“Well, darned if the little dickens didn’t make good!”
That was the way S.D. Harlow, 2304 North Twelfth street, Kansas City, Kansas, greeted the information his granddaughter, Harlean McGrew, had “crashed the gates of Hollywood” and had been given a featured part in “The Saturday Night Kid”, Clara Bow’s next picture.
Mr. Harlow is a realtor. When his 19-year-old granddaughter left Kansas City, Kansas, for Hollywood two years ago he was a bit skeptical. He didn’t oppose the venture because his daughter and Harlean’s mother, Mrs. Jean Bell*, went along.
“I didn’t encourage the idea, because I didn’t want her to have the disappointment of failing,” he said. “In fact, I thought her movie ambitions a were childish fancy that would soon pass. I’m glad to learn she has succeeded, and I’m flattered she has assumed my name for screen purposes.”
Harlean will be known on the screen as Jean Harlow. Her grandfather said she was a former student at the Barstow school here and the Highland Park school in Chicago.
Harlean is the third girl from the left in the above picture, which shows how thoroughly she has gotten into movie circles. The girls are Jean Arthur, Clara Bow, Harlean and Leone Lane.
