Given especially to honor nine honorary members, the midseason luncheon of the Euterpe Opera Reading Club, taking place Tuesday in the Fiesta Room of the Ambassador, was a gala affair with many notables of the musical world in attendance.
At the speakers’ table, over which Mrs. Lillian K. Floyd presided, were Carrie Jacobs Bond, Mary Carr Moore, Mme. Ellen Beach Yaw, Mrs. Elmer G. Mansfield, Daisy Bannerman Coats, Charles Wakefield Cadman, L.E. Behymer and Roland Paul, musical director. Other honorees included Jean Harlow, leading lady for “Hell’s Angels”, recently completed air picture, and her mother, Mrs. Jean Harlow, and 18-year-old James Requa, protege of Mr. Paul. Mayor Porter, who had been scheduled as a speaker, was unable to be present, but was represented by Mrs. Porter and her sister, Mrs. Moody.
That the day of “tin pan alley” is past, was the message brought by Mr. Cadman, who, after six months in the talking picture field, contends that the movies will soon make the entire country “opera minded”.
Behymer, paying tribute to the accomplishments of Euterpe along the same line, declared, “As pathfinders, you’re the best little bunch of musical Lindbergh’s that I know.”
Decorations, as arranged for by the event by Mrs. Walter C. Burke, were exceptionally lovely, being of purple stock, orange marigolds and maidenhair fern, while at each place was a tiny bouquet of violets. Mrs. J.C. Ferguson was chairman for the day.
