HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 2 — Her name is Jean Harlow. She hails from Chicago, and has lived with her parents in Bev Hills for a year. She’s tall and slim and very blonde. Naturally blonde.
Hal Roach glimpsed her about twelve months ago and promptly signed her to a five year contract. But Miss Harlow’s grandfather had his own ideas about the sinema. He told her flatly if she emoted in a single picture he’d cut her out of his will. And he was wealthy.
So Jean cogitated and decided to agree with her grandfather. Mr. Roach very agreeably saw her angle and destroyed the contract. That was a year ago. Miss Harlow’s grandfather passed away some months ago. She inherited a plump sum of do-re-me. She had forgotten pictures. Until–
Just recently, Billy Joy–Leatrice’s brother–was introduced to her in the lobby of Ye Roosevelt Hostelry. Billy has turned agent and therefore scout. He figured the blonde a s-s-s-swell bet. Subsequently she signed a contract with him.
The first supervisor to get a glance of her was Bernie Fineman at Famous Players. Bernie remembered a long forgotten enthusiasm. The result: Miss Harlow was signed pronto for a prominent role in Clara Bow’s new reeler, “The Saturday Kid”. That’s the way to break into the movies.
*Harlow’s grandfather, of course, did not predecease her. And the film was called The Saturday Night Kid.
