A priceless candid of Jean out on the town at the Troc I can’t help but sharing—even if the quality is a little low. (This is a Lantern scan, and I tweaked the brightness/contrast on this a little bit for ease of viewing). Photo by none other than candid photographer extraordinaire Hyman Fink, whose other work of Harlow I’ve shared a lot of recently.
From Movie Mirror, 1935:
“They don’t give a Continental—it looks more like a fox trot. Do we have to tell you that the lady in this striking shot is Jean Harlow and that the gent is Bill Haines? Pianist is Phil Olman [sic], late of Olman and Arden.”*
Haines (who was also a great friend to Joan Crawford) and his lifelong partner, Jimmie Shields, often ran in the same circles as Harlow; there’s quite a few pictures of her with one or the other at various dinners and Hearst parties. This truly candid shot of them together is darling. I feel like it might have been taken the same night as a group shot of Harlow, Haines, Shields, and Bill Powell among others.
