From my collection: a rare bedside portrait of Jean Harlow taken by Clarence Sinclair Bull in her majestic Club View Drive bedroom, spring 1932. I’m a big fan of the incredibly Harlowesque fur-trimmed robe—is that ermine, or marabou?
If my hunch is correct, I think this is from the same ‘32 Bull session (swipe) that has Harlow showing off her regal Club View vanity. Her wave (and her traveling mole) seem to line up. Swipe again for a full picture of Harlow’s bedroom, taken by Bull around the same time. I love detail in movie star bedroom portraits, and Jean’s is a good example—the daybed in the corner, and the oversized bedspread, really make this room cozy.
For those who don’t know, Club View got its name from its location, the hills just west of the Los Angeles Country Club—obviously, Harlow was the lucky owner of a breathtaking view. Harlow (and her mother) imbued their Club View home with a charming classical English energy—minus the satin bedspreads. Its simpler decor has more personal appeal to me than Harlow’s white Colonial mansion on Beverly Glen she’d move into the next year, 1933.
