December 15, 1931: Jean Harlow is photographed with her luggage after her arrival in New York City, fresh from Kansas City in order to carry out her most recent string of personal appearance tours. Harlow arrived the night of the fourteenth to start engagements at various movie palaces for about a week before moving on … Continue reading Harlow in NYC, 1931

I have myriads of favorite Harlow portraits, as we all do. This is one of them. Jean looks impossibly angelic as she’s candidly photographed with a bouquet of flowers on December 8, 1931. Image courtesy of the Kansas City Public Library. On this day, Jean and her mother had been invited to lunch with some … Continue reading Harlow as Kansas City Kitty (1931, part 1)

94 years ago in Harlow History, October 19, 1932: Solemn and sad-eyed (but still beautiful) Jean Harlow makes a modest appearance in probate court following her husband Paul Bern’s death the previous month. Here, she was named executrix of his estate. At least the last photograph was taken by Frank Bentley (photo and accompanying credit courtesy TESSA). 97 years ago in Harlow History, October 19, 1929: Laurel and Hardy’s two-reeler Roach comedy, BACON GRABBERS (1929), is released. In it is a teenage and shockingly blonde Jean Harlow, even under her dark cloche, who happily closes the reel by coming home to proudly inform her husband (Edgar Kennedy) she’s paid off the radio these two bumbling repo men had just destroyed. (I don’t think I need to make a disclaimer for century-old spoilers). The full short is free to watch on YouTube, etc.
