Harlow as Kansas City Kitty (1931)

Today in Harlow History, December 8, 1931: 89 years ago today, Jean Harlow made the rounds in her hometown, Kansas City, Missouri (accompanied by mother and stepfather) at the very beginning of her East Coast personal appearance tour. Shown here at the Hotel Baltimore:

She left LA for Missouri on December 6, two days after receiving a bonus from her boss, the one and only Howard Hughes.⁣ She arrived in Kansas City the night of the seventh, and subsequently posed for these portraits her first full day in town. With her mother:

Harlow lounges on a couch in her suite, grinning for the camera.

These portraits were taken after a busy day of appearances, including being feted by the South Central Business Association. You may recognize this velvet wrap, as it was in her wardrobe for a few years. It was worn in a December 1930 publicity shoot for The Secret Six.

Back to December 8, 1931. Harlow was interviewed by the Kansas City Times the night of her arrival, and it was published the day these photos were made. Here are some delightfully snarky quotes from the article:⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Harlow stayed in KC until the tenth. She arrived in New York City on the fourteenth for a string of East Coast theater engagements, and was again photographed upon her arrival.
